Made for this moment

A San Diego evening, reimagined.
At sky scale.

The Embarcadero, downtown ballpark setting, and San Diego’s coastal neighborhoods offer different event stories. We connect the creative with the practical view: where guests gather, which land manager controls the site, and how the full flight operation could fit.

Starbound Labs designs the show and brings the performance together. Our Spectra drones, in-house firmware, and Starbound OS software connect the creative work with the fleet and team on the ground.

Your occasion sets the direction. We shape the creative around it.

Show imagery illustrates creative possibilities, rather than performances at specific San Diego venues.

Rooted in San Diego

A show with a sense of place.

Local inspiration. A story made for your audience.

A composition inspired by the bay

A waterfront show can draw on the movement of the harbor without assuming the water is available for flight operations. Ships, paths, buildings, and guest circulation shape the view. We develop the sequence for an agreed audience position and separately assess the operational area.

A finale with a musical thread

The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park provides a waterfront concert context. A potential aerial finale would need to fit stage cues, audience direction, nearby maritime activity, and operator requirements. Its recognizable setting does not establish a drone-show partnership or an approved flight footprint.

A brand message after the conference

For a downtown conference reception, a short reveal can connect the day’s ideas with the evening gathering. We consider the guests’ route outdoors, nearby buildings, lighting, and the proposed flight area before committing to the creative scale.

For the fans around the ballpark

A Padres gathering or another sports occasion can build around team colors and cleared graphics. Petco Park’s event schedule and the actual flight notices matter. The review covers stadium restrictions and crowd separation alongside the separate venue and airspace permissions.

Keep the personal detail at the center

A wedding or private celebration can end with a formation only your guests fully understand. A coastal view may provide inspiration, but venue access, neighboring homes, tree cover, and guest placement determine the workable plan. Weather contingencies are discussed before show night.

Civilian and military aviation share the region

San Diego International, the city’s general aviation airports, Miramar, and North Island are distinct considerations. The exact flight location determines relevance. Military restrictions, airport authorization, coastal land permission, and border-area notices are checked separately where applicable.

Waterfront Park

San Diego, California

A county-managed downtown event setting where lawns, fountains, buildings, public access, and airspace constrain the proposed footprint.

The airspace is part of the plan

Airports, airspace
& FAA approvals.

The right starting point is your exact venue, launch location, show height, and date.

For each proposed show, we check current FAA maps, NOTAMs, temporary flight restrictions, and the complete flight area. Nearby airports and military facilities are part of that review, alongside other local aviation activity.

San Diego International Airport (SAN)

San Diego, California · bayfront airport environment

Official facility information

Downtown and waterfront proposals need early review of the exact show volume, current airspace and aircraft activity. Ground permission and aviation authorization remain separate.

Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport (MYF)

San Diego, California · Kearny Mesa

Official facility information

One of the city’s general aviation airports. Review the actual event site, current airspace, traffic, height, and operation before confirming requirements.

Brown Field Municipal Airport (SDM)

Southern San Diego, California · border region

Official facility information

Relevant to south-area plans. Review civilian traffic, current airspace, border-related notices, and any other applicable restrictions for the full operation.

Marine Corps Air Station Miramar

San Diego, California · military air station

Official facility information

Military aviation and installation restrictions need distinct review. Required military permissions and any FAA authorization must both fit the proposed operation.

Naval Air Station North Island

Coronado, California · military installation across the bay

Official facility information

A relevant bay-area military aviation consideration. Review current restrictions and any required military coordination independently from venue or landowner consent.

FAA airspace authorization

Where the flight area requires controlled-airspace authorization, we identify the applicable FAA process. LAANC may be available for eligible operations; airspace authorization for operations using an operational waiver follows the FAA’s designated process through FAADroneZone. An airport phone call is not a substitute for the required FAA authorization.

FAA authorization guidance

Stadiums & event restrictions

Qualifying sporting events can trigger temporary flight restrictions affecting stadiums and surrounding areas. We review the applicable notices and show timing; venue permission or a routine airspace authorization alone does not remove these restrictions.

FAA stadium guidance

Show operations & ground permissions

The show plan also determines operational waiver requirements, including a multiple-aircraft waiver where one pilot operates multiple drones. New operational waiver applications use the FAA’s Aviation Safety Hub. Venue and landowner permission, crowd separation, and any local event permits are handled alongside the aviation review.

FAA waiver guidance

San Diego special events and filming

Event permits, park or waterfront permissions, FAA authorization, and military restrictions are separate parts of planning.

Official planning guidance

California State Parks drone guidance

District rules, park management plans, commercial activity, and land-use permissions must be checked for the specific park. A park event reservation does not establish flight permission.

A few things you might be wondering

Planning a show
in San Diego?

Can we plan a show along the Embarcadero?

Start with the exact event site and land manager. Port, county, city, and military properties have different requirements. We assess airport airspace, maritime activity, public access, current notices, and the full show footprint before confirming feasibility.

Can you plan a drone show at my San Diego venue?

Start by sharing the address, event date, and any venue information you have. We review the proposed launch area, audience viewing position, access, surrounding airspace, and site conditions before confirming whether a show is feasible.

Do you work outside downtown San Diego?

We can review event plans in San Diego and surrounding communities, including Carlsbad, Oceanside, Coronado. Each property needs its own assessment of access, audience positions, airspace, and flight space.

Can the show include our logo, names, or music?

Yes. We design formations, colors, animation, and choreography around your story. Tell us which brand elements, personal details, and music matter to the event so we can discuss the creative direction.

How much does an event in San Diego cost?

Pricing depends on the number of drones, creative scope, event location, travel, and production requirements. Share your plans and we’ll prepare a quote for your event.

How far ahead should we get in touch?

Contact us as soon as you have a date and a possible venue. Early planning gives us time to review the location, develop the show, and coordinate the event requirements. Availability depends on your date and production needs.

What happens if the weather changes?

Weather is part of the planning and show-day review. We discuss operating conditions and contingency arrangements with you before the event; the final decision to fly depends on conditions on the day.
