Made for this moment

A city of making. A moment in light.
At sky scale.

Sheffield combines industrial references, a strong music calendar and neighbourhoods on changing terrain. Don Valley Bowl, Hillsborough Park and the civic centre each bring different opportunities and constraints. We shape an original entertainment concept around your event and assess the actual flight area before confirming feasibility.

Starbound Labs designs the show and brings the performance together. Our Spectra drones, in-house firmware, and Starbound OS software connect the creative work with the fleet and team on the ground.

Your occasion sets the direction. We shape the creative around it.

Show imagery illustrates creative possibilities, rather than performances at specific Sheffield venues.

Rooted in Sheffield

A show with a sense of place.

Local inspiration. A story made for your audience.

Steel as a creative starting point

A sequence of sparks, lines and flowing forms can draw on Sheffield’s manufacturing identity without claiming a past local performance. For a company anniversary, begin with the atmosphere you want guests to share, then review the proposed content and setting.

A music finale in the Don Valley

Don Valley Bowl is used for organised outdoor entertainment. A new festival proposal needs a defined audience direction, separated production space and coordination with surrounding activities. A venue’s event licence is not a flight authorisation.

Hillsborough’s park audience

Hillsborough Park hosts Tramlines as well as everyday community use. For your own event, trees, paths, neighbouring homes and ground conditions belong in the planning conversation. We do not assume a previous festival layout provides a suitable drone launch footprint.

A civic moment near the Peace Gardens

The Peace Gardens sit within a busy city-centre setting. Buildings and pedestrian routes can make a clear view harder to achieve than a map suggests. An aerial idea would require an independently assessed performance area and operator agreement.

Follow the ground before drawing the sky

Sheffield’s changes in level matter for both crew access and guest sightlines. A wedding or private reception on a hillside needs a usable launch surface and a consistent viewing direction, with trees and surrounding property considered.

Check current aviation, including changing airport plans

Netherthorpe provides an active local aviation reference outside Sheffield. Doncaster Sheffield Airport is in a reopening programme, so future airspace arrangements must be checked for the show date. A quiet-looking former airport is not evidence that the surrounding sky is unrestricted.

Outdoor concert bowl

Don Valley Bowl

Sheffield, England

Review the event operator, launch control, audience orientation and neighbouring transport or sports activity. Existing entertainment permissions do not establish flight feasibility.

Park & festival grounds

Hillsborough Park

Sheffield, England

Trees, public routes, sports use and surrounding homes need review with park management. An event boundary must support separate guest and flight areas.

Civic gardens & gathering space

Peace Gardens

Sheffield, England

A tightly constrained centre setting requiring council discussion. Buildings, water features and pedestrian movement may rule out an aerial component without suitable separate land.

The airspace is part of the plan

Airports, airspace
& CAA authorisations.

The right starting point is your exact venue, launch location, show height, and date.

We review current U.K. aeronautical information, NOTAMs, restricted airspace and aerodrome Flight Restriction Zones against the full flight area, altitude and date. Civilian and military activity, temporary restrictions and ground permissions each form part of the plan.

Netherthorpe Aerodrome

Thorpe Salvin, near Worksop · outside Sheffield

Official facility information

The operator publishes a drone permission process and notes activity can occur outside published hours. Assess its FRZ and flying activity against the actual proposal.

Doncaster Sheffield Airport

Doncaster · outside Sheffield

Official facility information

The council describes an ongoing reopening programme. Check current operational status, notices and any reinstated or changed airspace for the show date rather than assume either routine operation or unrestricted airspace.

RAF Waddington

Lincolnshire · wider region, outside the Sheffield metro

Official facility information

A wider-region military airfield reference when proposals extend east. Relevant military activity and restrictions require their own review.

CAA operational authorisation

A swarm display needs an authorisation appropriate to the operation. We review the proposed fleet, flight volume, crowd separation and operating conditions against the applicable Specific Category requirements and current CAA swarm guidance.

CAA swarm guidance

Airspace & aerodrome permission

Operational authorisation and permission to use restricted airspace are separate. We check FRZ boundaries, other restrictions and the relevant aerodrome or air traffic permission process, including NATS where applicable. A NOTAM is a notice, not a flight permission.

NATS flight application guidance

Creative content & ground permissions

Landowner consent, council event requirements and the proposed display content need their own review. CAA guidance flags aerial advertising restrictions under section 82 of the Civil Aviation Act; operational authorisation does not settle those requirements.

Airport reopening information

Use the council’s current statements as a starting point, then verify the published aviation position and notices for the event date.

A few things you might be wondering

Planning a show
in Sheffield?

Does Sheffield’s hilly terrain change the viewing plan?

Yes. We review the launch surface, access and audience elevation alongside trees and buildings. The design needs to be readable from the actual viewing position, and the complete flight volume must meet the applicable airspace and operational requirements.

Can you plan a drone show at my Sheffield venue?

Start by sharing the address, event date, and any venue information you have. We review the proposed launch area, audience viewing position, access, surrounding airspace, and site conditions before confirming whether a show is feasible.

Do you work outside central Sheffield?

We welcome enquiries for Sheffield and the surrounding area. Rotherham, Chesterfield, Barnsley and Doncaster are separate locations. Terrain and current aviation activity differ across South Yorkshire and north Derbyshire. Share the venue address, date and audience layout so we can assess the specific proposal.

What creative content can a U.K. show include?

We can explore shapes, colour, movement and music for an entertainment-led display. The CAA highlights restrictions on aerial advertising and other communications under section 82 of the Civil Aviation Act. Logos, QR codes and written messages need particular review; an operational authorisation alone does not establish that the content is lawful.

How much does an event in Sheffield cost?

Pricing depends on the number of drones, creative scope, event location, travel, and production requirements. Share your plans and we’ll prepare a quote for your event.

How far ahead should we get in touch?

Contact us as soon as you have a date and a possible venue. Early planning gives us time to review the location, develop the show, and coordinate the event requirements. Availability depends on your date and production needs.

What happens if the weather changes?

Weather is part of the planning and show-day review. We discuss operating conditions and contingency arrangements with you before the event; the final decision to fly depends on conditions on the day.
