Made for this moment

A city of stories. A new way to share yours.
At sky scale.

The Old Town, New Town and Leith offer different points of inspiration for an Edinburgh event. Festival crowds, steep terrain and protected historic settings also shape the practical choices. We connect an original entertainment concept with an individual review of the venue, viewing position and airspace.

Starbound Labs designs the show and brings the performance together. Our Spectra drones, in-house firmware, and Starbound OS software connect the creative work with the fleet and team on the ground.

Rooted in Edinburgh

A show with a sense of place.

Local inspiration. A story made for your audience.

A festival finale with its own identity

Edinburgh Art Festival connects work across areas including the Old Town, New Town and Leith. For your own arts programme, an original sequence can move from a simple shape into a layered musical finale. Participation in an existing festival is never implied by a location proposal.

Read the skyline from the audience position

The Old Town and New Town give Edinburgh a distinctive built landscape. Buildings, changes in level and narrow streets can interrupt a view that looks open on a map. We choose a readable performance direction from the actual guest area before developing detailed formations.

A Leith gathering with a waterfront rhythm

Leith’s markets and creative life suggest a different pace from the city centre. A community evening or private event can draw on movement and colour rather than promotional messaging. Any waterfront proposal must assess public routes, nearby properties, operational activity and weather exposure.

Sporting hospitality with a separate flight plan

Scottish Gas Murrayfield is a major reference for rugby gatherings. For a proposed celebration, the stadium operator, rooflines, crowd movements and the surrounding flight volume need individual review. A match ticket or hospitality booking does not authorise an aerial performance.

A company evening toward Ingliston

The Royal Highland Centre provides indoor and outdoor event settings on the western side of Edinburgh. Its location makes airport-related planning an early consideration. An entertainment-led company finale needs suitable outdoor guest positions and a flight area that can receive the necessary permissions.

A private celebration on changing terrain

For a wedding or family gathering around Edinburgh, a flowing light sequence can complement the evening. Slopes, trees, access routes and nearby homes affect both production and the audience view. We also plan the show window around seasonal darkness and the venue’s event conditions.

Use these venues as starting points for your event plan. Each listing is a potential setting for individual review, with venue participation, permissions, launch and flight space, airspace, and show timing confirmed before a performance is agreed.

National rugby stadium & event setting

Scottish Gas Murrayfield

Edinburgh, Scotland

Begin with the operator, spectator layout and actual event schedule. Rooflines, nearby development, crowd separation and the required flight volume may constrain an aerial proposal.

Outdoor stage & civic event gardens

Ross Bandstand, West Princes Street Gardens

Edinburgh, Scotland

A city-centre stage setting requiring council coordination. Heritage surroundings, trees, slopes, adjacent transport routes and public access need assessment before any aerial component is agreed.

Official venue website

Exhibition grounds & outdoor event campus

Royal Highland Centre

Ingliston, Edinburgh, Scotland

An outdoor-event starting point with significant airport planning considerations. Confirm the proposed flight area and aerodrome permissions before assuming that open grounds make a display feasible.

Official venue website

Historic landscape & managed public park

Holyrood Park

Edinburgh, Scotland

A sensitive landscape managed by Historic Environment Scotland, rather than a standard event field. Any proposal needs explicit manager review of heritage, wildlife, terrain, public access and aviation; no launch permission is implied.

The airspace is part of the plan

Airports, airspace
& CAA authorisations.

The right starting point is your exact venue, launch location, show height, and date.

We review current U.K. aeronautical information, NOTAMs, restricted airspace and aerodrome Flight Restriction Zones against the full flight area, altitude and date. Civilian and military activity, temporary restrictions and ground permissions each form part of the plan.

Edinburgh Airport

West Edinburgh / Ingliston

Official facility information

Review the airport FRZ and current permission process for the full proposed flight area, especially western event settings. An airport permission does not replace the applicable CAA operational authorisation.

Leuchars Aerodrome

Fife · wider region, outside Edinburgh and its immediate metro

Official facility information

A military aviation reference when an event plan extends into Fife. Do not treat it as a city-centre airport or apply its local requirements indiscriminately to Edinburgh; check current military activity for the actual site.

CAA operational authorisation

A swarm display needs an authorisation appropriate to the operation. We review the proposed fleet, flight volume, crowd separation and operating conditions against the applicable Specific Category requirements and current CAA swarm guidance.

CAA swarm guidance

Airspace & aerodrome permission

Operational authorisation and permission to use restricted airspace are separate. We check FRZ boundaries, other restrictions and the relevant aerodrome or air traffic permission process, including NATS where applicable. A NOTAM is a notice, not a flight permission.

NATS flight application guidance

Creative content & ground permissions

Landowner consent, council event requirements and the proposed display content need their own review. CAA guidance flags aerial advertising restrictions under section 82 of the Civil Aviation Act; operational authorisation does not settle those requirements.

CAA aerial advertising guidance

Edinburgh public-space events

The council’s public-space guidance covers event management and refers organisers to aviation requirements. Ground use, access and event permission remain separate from the CAA authorisation.

Official planning guidance

Historic landscape management

Holyrood Park has archaeological, landscape and wildlife interests alongside public access. Speak with the site manager about the actual proposal; public access rights do not establish permission to stage a drone display.

Musselburgh, Dalkeith and Livingston are separate towns; South Queensferry is within the City of Edinburgh council area. Firth-side exposure and terrain vary, and wider-region aviation references are not city-centre facilities. Dundee is a separate city farther north.

A few things you might be wondering

Planning a show
in Edinburgh?

Does Edinburgh’s summer daylight affect show timing?

Yes. We plan the audience schedule around the darkness needed for the intended effect, alongside the venue’s operating hours and event permissions. Summer festival timings, public access and weather contingencies need to fit that plan. We agree an appropriate window for the exact date rather than promising one fixed evening time.

Can you plan a drone show at my Edinburgh venue?

Start by sharing the address, event date, and any venue information you have. We review the proposed launch area, audience viewing position, access, surrounding airspace, and site conditions before confirming whether a show is feasible.

Do you work outside central Edinburgh?

Yes. Send your proposed venue in Edinburgh or the surrounding area, including Musselburgh, Dalkeith, South Queensferry or Livingston. Council boundaries, land control, terrain and aviation activity vary; each proposal needs its own review rather than a city-wide assumption.

What creative content can a U.K. show include?

We can explore shapes, colour, movement and music for an entertainment-led display. The CAA highlights restrictions on aerial advertising and other communications under section 82 of the Civil Aviation Act. Logos, QR codes and written messages need particular review; an operational authorisation alone does not establish that the content is lawful.

How much does an event in Edinburgh cost?

Pricing depends on the number of drones, creative scope, event location, travel, and production requirements. Share your plans and we’ll prepare a quote for your event.

How far ahead should we get in touch?

Contact us as soon as you have a date and a possible venue. Early planning gives us time to review the location, develop the show, and coordinate the event requirements. Availability depends on your date and production needs.

What happens if the weather changes?

Weather is part of the planning and show-day review. We discuss operating conditions and contingency arrangements with you before the event; the final decision to fly depends on conditions on the day.
